Prayers

A Treasury of Prayers
for use at this time of CORVID-19

10th March 2020

General Prayers for Health
Lord Jesus, you came that we might have life in all its fullness.
In this time of sickness and the fear of sickness,
give me the health of mind – that I might seek out wise guidance and act upon it;
the health of body – that will enable me to serve you and those around me;
the health of spirit – that my soul rests in the secure knowledge
that there is nothing that can separate me from the Father’s love.
Give me the grace to share your peace – that peace the world cannot give.

Prayer for those in Authority
Loving God, in Christ Jesus, the servant of all,
you call us to the service of others.
Grant to those who govern the community
the skill to recognise its urgent needs
and the strength to pursue the common good.
Endow us all with patience and courage,
that we may care for the suffering,
feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and sustain the needy.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for affected countries
Lord God, you created our world and its peoples.
Today, we hold before you the people of (name of country)
affected by the coronavirus.
In your goodness, give courage and healing to those who are sick;
and sustain the doctors and nurses who work to care for them.
Give wisdom to those in authority, that in all their decisions,
the dignity and well-being of citizens affected by this virus,
may be of paramount concern.

Prayer for those Affected
Merciful God, come to the help of your people.
Be our shelter in this time of peril
and strengthen the bonds of our community.
Bring healing to all who suffer the ravages of disease
and assist those whose skill and art can put an end to this affliction.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

O God, our refuge and our shield,
even when we walk in the shadow of death you are there at our side.
Be with your people in this time of danger:
bring strength to the afflicted
and protection to those untouched by disease.
Give us love and courage, that we may trust in your power to save
and reach out to all who need our care.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Spiritual Communion (cf. St Alphonsus Liguori)
My Jesus,
I believe that you are present in this Holy Sacrament of the altar.
I love you above all things
and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally,
come spiritually into my soul
so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.

Self-Isolation
Those who are self-isolated may wish to spend some of their time in prayer. Use might be made of websites such as Pray as you go, Click to Pray or Universalis to follow the readings at Mass each day or to join in the Prayer of the Church.

Phrases from Scripture
O Lord, come to my rescue; Lord, come to my aid. Ps 39:14
Be still and know that I am God Ps 46: 10
Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed;
save me, and I shall be saved, for you are my praise. Jer 17:14
Lord, save me. Matt 14: 30
Do not let your hearts be troubled… Trust in God. John 14: 1
Amen, Come, Lord Jesus. Rev 22:20

Act Of Contrition
O my God, because you are so good,
I am very sorry that I have sinned against you,
but by the help of your grace, I will not sin again.

Act Of Faith
O my God, I believe in you and all that your Church teaches
because you have said it and your Word is true.

Act Of Hope
O my God, I hope in you for grace and for mercy
because of your promises, your mercy and your power.

Act Of Charity
O my God, because you are so good,
I love you with my whole heart
and for our sake, I love my neighbour as myself.

Prayer To The Holy Spirit
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful,
and enkindle in them the fire of your love.
V/. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created
R/. And you shall renew the face of the earth.
Let us pray.
O God, who taught the hearts of the faithful
by the light of the Holy Spirit,
grant that by the gift of the same Spirit we may always be truly wise
and ever rejoice in his consolation. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Salve Regina
Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy,
hail our light, our sweetness and our hope.
To you do we cry,
poor banished children of Eve.
To you do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.
Turn then, most gracious advocate,
your eyes of mercy towards us
and after this, our exile, show unto us
the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
V/. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.
R/. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ

The Memorare
Remember, O most loving Virgin Mary,
that it is a thing unheard of
that anyone who had recourse to your protection,
implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left forsaken.
Filled therefore with confidence in your goodness,
I fly to you, O Mother, Virgin of virgins.
To you I come; before you I stand a sorrowful sinner.
Despise not my words, O Mother of the Word,
but graciously hear and grant my prayer.

The Angelus (recited at 6 am, 12 noon and 6 pm)
V/. The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary.
R/. And she conceived by the Holy Spirit.
Hail Mary, full of grace …
V/. Behold the handmaid of the Lord.
R/. Be it done unto me according to your word.
Hail Mary, full of grace …
V/. (with head bowed) And the Word was made flesh.
R/. And dwelt among us.
Hail Mary, full of grace …
V/. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.
R/. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Let us pray.
Pour forth, we beseech you, O Lord, your grace into our hearts,
that, we to whom the incarnation of Christ, your Son,
was made known by the message of an angel,
may by His Passion and Cross, be brought to the glory of His Resurrection.
Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for the Household
Hear us, Lord, and send your angel from heaven
to visit and protect, to comfort and defend
all who live in this house. Amen.

Prayer To St. Michael
Holy Michael the Archangel, defend us in the day of battle.
Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host,
by the power of God, thrust down to hell Satan
and all the wicked spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls.

Prayer To Guardian Angel
O Angel of God, my guardian dear,
To whom God’s love commits me here,
Ever this day/night be at my side,
To light and guard, to rule and guide.

Cardinal Vincent writes, ‘We are still surrounded by the angels and by the saints who are glorifying God and protecting and assisting mankind. Why should we not make them our particular friends and allies in situations where we are touching limits that we cannot overcome?’

Dear Guardian Angel, go for me to the church, there kneel down at Mass for me. At the Offertory, take me to God, and offer Him my service: What I am, what I have, offer as my gift. At the Consecration, with your seraphic strength, adore my Saviour truly present, praying for those who have loved me, for those who have offended me, and for those now deceased, that the blood of Jesus may purify them all. During Holy Communion, bring to me the Body and Blood of Jesus uniting Him with me in spirit, so that my heart may become His dwelling place. Plead with Him, that through His sacrifice all people throughout the world may be saved. When the Mass ends, bring home to me and to every home, the Lord’s blessing. Amen.

Another Prayer To Guardian Angel
O my good Angel, whom God has appointed to be my guardian,
enlighten and protect me, direct me and govern me during this day/night. Amen

Prayer For The Dead
Eternal rest, grant unto them O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May + they rest in peace. Amen.

Commendation
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I give you my heart and my soul.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, assist me in my last agony.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, may I breathe forth my soul in peace with you. Amen

For A Happy Death
Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.
Lord Jesus, receive my soul.

Prayer To The Sacred Heart
O Sacred Heart of Jesus I implore
the grace to love you daily more and more (said three times).
